Today we went to Church here in San Pedro. In order to get there we had to catch the boat at 8:00 Am for the 20 minute boat ride...not quite 20 minutes....Anyways we get to town at least an hour before church is to start and everything in town is quiet.
The church is renting a few rooms on the 3rd story of a building on the main street of town. They have a branch here and there were 50 members in attendance not including visitors or the missionaries. Of that number there were 6 Priesthood holders of which 2 were missionaries, One was a visiting District President and then the Branch Presidency.
Church was to be 2 hrs long....My kind of church. It seems that they fore go Sunday school and just have sacrament and Priesthood/relief Society.
Some of the things done are not quite the way we do them and its hard not to correct them. They are trying. For Blessing and passinf the sacrament. One of the full time missionaries takes care of breaking the bread and blessing the sacrament. 2 members then pass the sacrament (one being a visitor and the other a member of the branch)
The other missionary is in the back of the room and translates the meeting into spanish for thos who are non English speaking. They have those hearing aids like Ross Peck uses. So the missionary talks into a mike and what he says comes out in the hearing aids. It looks like it works well.
Its evident that the church is young and stuggling. The members have their work cut out for themselves.
Church hours 9:30 to 11:30
It was interesting that they had the hymns to be sung on a board like we have, but only they had 2 sets of page numbers side by side. I couldn't figure out why. At the top above the page numbers they had E S .hmmmmmm. What does that stand for Sacrament...No How about English and spanish...They have 2 sets of hymn books one in English and One in Spanish....Lisette figured that one out....She was laughing at me...I had to also.
